Makara Sankranti

I seem to have forgotten or don't know exactly why we celebrate most of the festivals! So I am making an effort this year to find out more and then I thought it would be good to blog it. I will make an attempt to blog as we come across each festival. Since today is Makara Sankranti, it's time to find out more about it.

Makara means Capricorn and Sankranti means transition. As you all know Sun revolves around Earth and as he revolves, he moves across the different zodiac signs. When the sun enters Capricorn zodiac sign, it means that he has started to ascend and has entered the northern hemisphere. From this day, the days will start to become longer and warmer. It also marks the start of "Uttarayana", six-month northward journey. The other six-month journey is known as "Dakshinayana". Sankranti is also the start of harvesting season.

As Sun is a Hindu God, the day he enters Capricorn is treated as auspicious occasion because of two important things:
1. Brings more light into our life
2. You attain higher goals as Sun starts to ascend

Wish you all a very happy Makara Sankranti.
Ellarigu Sankranti habbada shubhashayagalu.
